Technical Paper: Froggie Revised - Ping Chao

The modifications to the “A Frog He Would A-Wooing Go” movie/animation were done because of one scene that contained unwanted white space within the color background. Although the end product is essentially the same, as seen by the end user, the process of bringing Froggie to this end point was a much longer project.

Idea/Concept

The original Froggie movie was produced using Macromedia Director, a program that creates animations and movies in Shockwave format. Since the original creation of this Shockwave production, a newer form of movie format called Flash, created using Macromedia Flash, is more commonly and successfully used..

The Shockwave version of Froggie was perfectly fine until the movie proceeded to the color sequence. During this scene, the color was distorted with blotches of white which really took away from one of the most important scenes of the movie. With this in mind, I began to think of ways to modify this ONE scene without having to edit the entire movie (or worse, do it all over again).

This, however, did not happen and I was forced to not only start from scratch, but also pursue creating the movie within the Flash format instead of Shockwave. In the end, the movie is seemingly unchanged, but getting to this new version required a lot of touch up on some aesthetic changes that needed to be made.

The Process

  1. All the images, sounds, and text are identical to the original version.
  2. First, these images and sounds had to be exported into Macromedia Flash, and some had to be brought into Adobe Photoshop for editing (reduce excess lines, unwanted spaces, etc.).
  3. Scene by scene compared Shockwave version to the new Flash version in order to maintain the same feel of the project.
  4. Added images along with sounds and text and synchronized them together in order to help the movie to flow better.
  5. The original problem of choppy images was solved using Photoshop.
  6. Combined scenes together to re-create the final version of Froggie.
  7. Flash document was created at a setting of 544px by 468px in order to accommodate the size of the original images.
  8. Removed introduction where there used to be a sequence of images in a blur of spinning, because this was not needed. Replaced this with gradual fading in of images.
