And so they began. They were scarcely on their way before they became lost in a tangle of trails, and the Keeper of Records lost his way. Again, fate interceded. A Pathmaker appeared before them and said "May I help?" The Old Woman welcomed her into their midst, and all of the journeyers were glad. As the group rested and ate, the Keeper of Records returned bringing with him his hidden store of icons and his vast knowledge of secret codes. The Pathmaker helped the Journeyers blaze a trail, and all kept keen eyes for tail feathers along the way. But they could not be certain that the feathers they found were indeed those of Mother Goose. The Wizard would accept no others, so they had to be sure. The Seeker of Meanings consulted her Book of Words and conjured up wisdom from all over the world. The Wise Seer recorded all that was known about Mother Goose in her Book of Remembering. The Protector of Precious Images proposed a special way to label the tail feathers found on the journey and she gathered together all the rare seals and documents from distant persons of great importance.

The more feathers they found, and the more information they gathered, the more concerned they became. It seemed that there was not one Mother Goose but many and her feathers changed from time to time and place to place. The Old Woman and her friends were discouraged and thought they could do no more, but the Young Knight said, "I can do it." And so they went off to the Land of the Dragon where they rested and ate until they could eat no more.
