IV Making Ready

At the appointed time, when the sun had risen and set three times, the Old Woman and her friends were ready. The Old Woman, the Wise Seer, the Magician-in-Training, the Keeper of Records, the Protector of Precious Images, the Seeker of Meanings, and the Observer went forth into the electronic forest to meet their Knight in Shining Armor. The Wise Seer who points to things others cannot yet see warned that the journey would be hard and much would be demanded of each of them. The Old Woman reminded them that the rewards of a successful quest were not for them but for the world. At least for those in the world who still find magic in the old stories. All were stout of heart, though some were frail of limb.

As they set forth on their journey, each was aware that the time would come when his or her special powers would be needed or all would be lost. It had come to the Wise Seer in a vision that they must find fifty tail feathers before Mother Goose would be revealed to the world. All knew that the journey would be long and the paths hidden and steep in the search for those feathers. The fifty feathers would be a gift to the Wizard so he would use his magic to help Mother Goose tell her stories.

Before setting forth on their journey, the Old Woman and her friends sat down to a fabulous feast to fortify them against the perils ahead.
