(AKA The Dead and Burial of Cock Robin)
Detailed Beauty in Death - Friends Arrive
Under a trunk with the stubs of pruned branches showing lies Cock Robin,
half supported by the tree. His eyes are closed, his red breast may be
stained with blood. An arrow fletched in the same brown-yellow of many
of the fallen leaves nearby protrudes from his abdomen.
He is attended by what appears to be a dove dressed in a full-skirted
morning dress and cape trimmed in white fur. Her yellow bonnet bears a
purple (color of second morning) band. The fly holds a flower of the same
shade. The beetle bears a large needle and has a spool of thread nearby.
Two smaller birds, one with gray plumage and what might be a white waistcoat,
the other with brown feathers and bundled into a gray shawl stand on one
side of a pond, clutching posies of yellow, blue and purple flowers. On
the far side of the pond stand two wading birds, both holding top hats;
one has gray plumage the other is sporting, in addition to gray feathers,
a wide white collar and white waistcoat. A white fish emerges from the
pond, clutching an empty white dish. The effect of the clothing is rather
“ England in the 1860s. .
