Three Wise Men of Gotham

Stuffed Animals – Maybe Not So Wise, But Happy

ECLIPSE Image Number 00560001

These wise men are actually animals. Whether or not they are intended to be stuffed animals, they are certainly stuffed into this small bowl. The choice of the elephant, rhino, and hippo in this small craft is innately humorous even before examining the expressions on their faces. These characters seem to be out for the fun of the ride and for each others’ company rather than to engage in a philosophical discussion. In fact, in spite of the weight, the bowl seems to be floating smoothly and securely on the top of gentle waves. Just in case those lines on the bowl are cracks rather than decorations, however, the lighthouse, and presumably potential help, in nearby. This illustration removes the ironic or mocking tone of the noodle tale by changing the nature of the title characters.
