Three Little Kittens
Is Someone Getting Married? - Mother Goose and Her Goose Are at the
Celebration
This illustration is different from most others due to the presence
of a human (Mother Goose we assume) and a real goose, who are at a banquet
table containing a stack of plates, a bowl of fruit, and what appears
to be a wedding cake (a much grander party then depicted in the other
versions). This is the first example of food other than a pie in the illustration.
It appears to be a fine spring day, judging by the light dresses worn
by Mother Goose and the mother cat and the green grass and blue sky shown
in another picture. Why the need for mittens in this weather? The goose,
wearing a large bow on his neck, is serving the pie onto a plate. The mother
cat and kittens are extremely naturalistic looking, except that the mother
cat is standing upright and is wearing a dress and white gloves, and is
holding a cup and plate. She has an angry expression on her face and the
kittens seem to be distressed; while Mother Goose gazes serenely out of
the picture plane. One kittens appears to be rolling on the ground in
distress while another has its head stuck under Mother Goose's dress,
possibly looking for a lost mitten. There is evidence of one mitten off
to the left, behind the angry mother, although she does not notice it.
The illustration appears to be done in watercolor, and has a delicate,
finely detailed style seen in the tucks and cloth pattern of the dresses
and the drawing of the cats’ features .
