Woman and Children - How Are They Portrayed?
One might study visual interpretations of a nursery rhyme by focusing on the portrayals of the various characters and components of that rhyme. For instance, in this rhyme, both the old woman and her children are normally pictured; but they may appear very differently. Looking at illustrations for “The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe,” one might ask:
- How old is the woman? Is she portrayed as kindly or as a child abuser?
- How many children are pictured? How would you describe the children?
- Do these characters appear to be living in poverty? What details in
the illustrations support your responses?
- Identify visual clues to the relationships among the characters?
- How do artists who picture aminals rather than humans convey character?
