Ring-a-Ring o’ Roses

Country Gentility - Children at Play

ECLIPSE Image Number 00290006

This illustration by Arthur Rackham includes several elements common in Ring a Ring o’ Roses illustrations. The children appear to be upper middle class, country gentility. The setting is clean and idyllic. The landscaping is well manicured and indicative of a romanticized pastoral setting. Following the last line of many versions, at least one of the children is falling down. This image has some of the same dark tones and swirling lines of other pictures by this artist, but here the overall mood is lighter.
