Peter Piper Picked A Peck of Pickled Peppers

A Peter Piper Rabbit - Is This a Game?

ECLIPSE Image Number 00890000

Carol Schwartz creates a simply dressed Peter Piper with a flute attached to a string around his neck. Unlike the other Peter Pipers, this one is a trim rabbit. Similar to the illustration in The Calico Mother Goose Book, these peppers are animated. However, instead of legs, these peppers have eye and mouths. The peppers seem to be watching Peter with smiles as he juggles three peppers. Only the pepper tossed in the air seems to be expressing alarm. Intriguingly, there is a basket of peppers behind Peter running in the opposite direction from Peter. In this case, it is the basket, which has legs and arms. Here too, I do not think the peppers are actually running away from Peter because he appears to be a jovial fellow, and the peppers are smiling in his presence. Perhaps the basket carrying the peppers is simply playing a game with Peter. It is interesting to note that there are two different kinds of peppers on two different bushes.
