Oranges and Lemons

Game Playing Today

ECLIPSE Image Number 01260004

This 1988 illustration also highlights the rhyme as game. Here, the churches have disappeared; the only reference to bells is one which appears in the top border of the page. This border also depicts oranges and lemons. A somewhat -ethnically-diverse group of boys and girls play this game; like the similar 1912 illustration, this one serves as a how-to, teaching children how the game is played. Again, the bright colors and smiling children make no reference to the darker interpretations of this rhyme.
