Old Mother Hubbard

It's Grandmother - Perhaps at the Turn of the 20th Century

Although today's grandmothers are more likely to be clad in jeans or leather, this image ? dress with lace trim and hearts on ithe fabric, an apron, "granny" glasses, and hair in a bun - is often used by illustrators to convey a grandmotherly figure. The look of shock on her face when she sees there is nothing in the cupboard indicates that this may just be an omission rather than the result of limited resources. Both the dog's ribbon and Mother Hubbard's attire support this speculation. It is interesting to question why Denslow used these warm reds and browns for this image and what these colors convey to viewers.
