Old Mother Hubbard

A Different Perspective - Is the Cupboard Really Bare?

This is the only illustration where neither the viewer nor the dog can see the contents of the cupboard. Old Mother Hubbard seems to be looking up very high into the cupboard, almost displaying a looking up at a higher being of sorts (or she could just be looking up on the top shelf). This illustration gives a sense of mystery to the readers because they are not able to see inside the cupboard. Warm blues and browns with small touches of red and yellow give a warmth to this image and make it more comforting than the rhyme would imply.
