Old Mother Hubbard
Wicked Witch of the West - But Note the Kindly Look
In some ways, this Old Mother Hubbard is reminiscent of the Wicked Witch
of the West from "The Wizard of Oz.". She has the pointy nose
and chin, as well as the broomstick in her hand, but her eyes and smile
are kindly. The dog's position in relation to her also bears this out.
Perhaps the intent of the illustrator was just to show a poor old woman
in times past. The viewer can see that this picture is dated, because
of the tea kettle hanging from the fireplace and the few other utensils
in the room.
