Old Mother Hubbard

Superiority - Top Dog

Wegman's "dogs as human" photographs have an artsy appeal to many viewers, but the human hand may be confusing to the youngest readers. This image has a very different, and more modern, look than most illustrations for this rhyme. Notice the clean lines of the cabinetry, the use of negative space, and the glimpse of the refrigerator off to the right. Mother Hubbard is wearing an old-fashioned dust cap,but the use of mixed fabrics for her clothing is more contemporary. The Boston terrior's position on top of the cupboard hints at dominance and superiority over Mother Hubbard, who is standing on the floor looking puzzled.
