Moses Supposes His Toeses Are Roses
Baby Toes - Where Are the Roses?
In this recent illustration, Moses still is from an earlier time, but
he seems to have lost his roses for toes over the years. Here, Moses has
a bonnet and a dressing gown on, and he is sitting with his back to a
bush of roses. He is touching, perhaps counting, his toes, and there is
a notable lack of roses between them. His dress is blue, providing a contrast
against the red roses, and his matching bonnet partially covers his dark
hair. There are rose petals on the ground beside Moses, but no full grown
flowers. Moses' whimsical touching of his toes may signify the absence
of roses that were only there moments ago, or he may only be imagining
what it would be like to have roses for toes. It is as if the illustrator
caught the picture right after Moses realizes that even his toes could
not be roses.
