Moses Supposes His Toeses Are Roses

Moses in the Reeds - Even Rose Toes Come From Somewhere

ECLIPSE Image Number 00130006

This is the only illustration studied to depict the baby Moses in the biblical scenario. Baby Moses, with his bright blond hair, may be contemplating the bunches of roses that appear to have taken the place of his toes. His normal fingers are depicted above his white blanket, and he lies cradled in an open basket. The basket is floating on what appears to be a river, and it is surrounded by bulrushes. The sun is shining overhead and casting reflections of light onto the water. The shape of the basket, the swirls of the river, and the sun itself all seem to be protective circles to keep the baby safe. One can imagine that Moses is waiting patiently, looking at his rose toes, just before the pharaoh's daughter will pluck him from the water. Those rose toes may be an indication of the life of luxury he will live in the house of the pharaoh, but that life is as much an illusion as the rose toes.
