Little Miss Muffet

Is That a Tuffet? - Where Are These Characters Sitting?

ECLIPSE Image Number 00240001

Another unwelcome encounter is played out in the Watson illustration in which the spider is grabbing a chipmunk version of Miss Muffet around the waist. Her outstretched arm reaching away from him and her surprised expression indicate she does not appreciate his gestures. The spilling bowl and flying spoon demonstrate how startled she is by what has just occurred. At the bottom of the grassy knoll, a suitor, exhibiting the most proper decorum, is arriving at the door with flowers to win his lady's heart. Cartoon images of animal characters and soft colors dominated by yellows give this a playful, non-threatening feel. Could a tuffet really be a pincushion house?
