Little Miss Muffet

Help! - How Can She Get Away?

ECLIPSE Image Number 00260000

This dark and disturbing encounter depicts a male spider hovering over a young woman, older than many depictions of Little Miss Muffet. Here the spider, larger than Miss Muffet, has a menacing look and is actually touching her. She is clearly uncomfortable with the contact, giving this illustration an ominous, sexual overtone with the spider as predator. Her facial expression is alarming, and her outstretched fingers show her desire for escape from his grasp. Shades of black and gray further emphasize the creepiness of this assault. A disturbing feeling of doom is evident in this version that is clearly not intended for small children.
