Little Miss Muffet

Gentleman or Predator? Are His Intentions Honorable?

ECLIPSE Image Number 00350000

This interpretation is at first disturbing. The over-sized male spider is approaching from behind catching Miss Muffet off guard and invading her space on the blanket. He seems to be emerging from the shadowy bushes in the background. Although this Miss Muffet is older than most, her fragile appearance makes her seem very vulnerable. Her raised eyebrows and rounded eyes signal that this is an unwelcome guest. Upon further inspection, the spider could be a kind elderly “gentleman” introducing himself with the tipping of his hat. His vest, cane and spats give him a proper façade which coordinates with her formal attire. A wedding or other social gathering could be the occasion for this meeting. The theme of an older male approaching a young girl is introduced here, but this spider's grandfatherly features lessen the menacing overtones. The white and pale-colored attire of the girl stands out against the muted earth tones, making her the focus of attention.
