Three Blind Mice

The New American Gothic - Will There Be Mice Tails for Dinner?

ECLIPSE Image Number 00370003

The most obvious thing about this illustration is its allusion to Grant Wood’s American Gothic, one of the most parodied of all American paintings. The faces of the characters, their rigid frontal stance, and the pitchfork clearly allude to that work of art. The electric knife, however, is anachronistic, removing this image from the1930s of the original. The warm colors and the spirited jumping of the mice from the carving board make this image less threatening than what is actually portrayed.
