Ladybird, Ladybird

Both Frightening and Silly. What Is This Mother Thinking?

ECLIPSE Image Number 00480007

No one is actually warning the ladybird here; she flies by herself towards her burning house, complete with a frightened but silly-looking Ann under the warming pan. The ladybird is given a hat to humanize her and mark her "role" as the motherly head of the household. What is most interesting is the mother's reaction to the disaster that struck her house. It is open to interpretation whether she is showing any concern or panic, or is she just thinking, "Oh my, what happened here?" The latter interpretation could shift the meaning of the rhyme to being about the consequences of the indifference and/or irresponsibility of the mother. Overall, the cartoon-style humor of the image negates any fright or negative interpretation.
