Jack and Jill Went Up A Hill

Eerie Woods - Elves and Other Troll-like Creatures Lurk Near the Well

ECLIPSE Image Number 00290003

The scene shown in this illustration of the Jack and Jill rhyme has Jack holding his head after having tumbled down the hill with Jill close behind. This depiction differs from others in that the well is tucked away in a niche in a wooded section of a hillside and is being used by other people. Typically Jack and Jill are alone when they attempt to complete their task. Also shown in this rendition, in a typical Rackham fashion, hidden among the roots of the trees are elfish or troll-like creatures peeking out observing the mishap of Jack and Jill, which lends an eerie feeling to the illustration.
