Jack and Jill Went Up A Hill
Computer Age - Jack and Jill Are Transformed into Robot-like Creatures

This illustration comes from a Web site created for children of the computer age. The authors seek to use imaginative word images to teach children abstract thinking. The Jack and Jill rhyme here is depicted with curved lines of text that form two arches, on a white background. The arches form the hill that Jack goes up, and Jill goes down. The version of the rhyme is not a new one, although the design of the illustration is a departure, as are the characters. Jack is a figure created with a series of circles. His head and body are larger circles (white, yellow), while his neck and legs are made using smaller circles piled on top of one another (red, purple). He doesn’t look like a boy, but like some strange robot with hair carrying a bright blue pail, walking up the hill created by the text. From the girl depicted in typical illustrations of the rhyme, Jill has been transformed to an animal that looks like a dog, running down the hill created by the text. The dog has a blue body shaped like an eye, a blue head, and legs created by tiny red circles. It isn’t clear why this type of illustration would encourage abstract thinking. However, it is a departure from most illustrations of the rhyme.
