Jack Be Nimble

Creature Features – Other Animals as Jack

It is certainly not always the case that Jack is pictured as a human character. In fact, some of the most interesting images are of Jack as another animal. Here we see Jack as a frog, a rabbit, a kangaroo, and a preternatural character from the realm of fairyland.

  • There is an obvious reason these animals were used in the illustrations. What other animals would have a similar impact?
  • How does the specific animal chosen convey a particular impression of Jack?
  • Do the animal characters remain faithful to their species while acting as Jack?
  • How are different moods created in these illustrations?
