Little Jack Horner

Cheeky, Yet Winsome Jack - Who Could Stay Angry with This Tousle-haired Little Angel?

ECLIPSE Image Number 01450003

Many illustrated collections of Mother Goose rhymes include a wholesome and nostalgic theme in their design; the sample above is representative of these. The illustration is clearly expressive of love for and acceptance of an innocent troublemaker. This boy has obviously won the love and affection of adults, who in turn supply him with the sparklingly neat clothes he is wearing, the loyal puppy by his side, the meticulously crafted stool upon which he is sitting while serving his corner-staring sentence, the hand-knit stockings nailed to the wall, the teddy bear that Jack has brought to the corner with him, and most certainly the sentimental indulgence of the scene, topped off by the garland wreath border given to the whole scene.
