Why the Mouse in the Clock? - Where Else in a House Full of Cats?

In the Margaret Tarrant Nursery Rhyme Book illustration, we see the mother, children and kittens very interested and with a surprised expression fascinated with the mouse in the clock. But why is the mouse there? With all those kittens in the house, the mouse had to run somewhere. Why not to the old grandfather clock? This rather ornate clock seems out of place in the rustic stone home decorated with very practical, and somewhat primitive, utensils for daily living. Warm, dark tones give this image a cosy feel, and the bottom border shows the cats chasing the mouse out of the picture and out of the cosy home.
