Hey Diddle Diddle

Realistically Earthbound Surprising View

ECLIPSE Image Number 00690005

Caldecott cleverly keeps his cow’s two feet on solid ground but gives the illusion of jumping over the moon with the appearance of the moon near the horizon seen below her raised hind feet. The sight of the moon below the cow so startles the milkmaid that she throws out her arms, tossing the pail and spilling the milk. After all, who would want to milk a cow that has such power? Simple lines and sepia tones add to the enjoyment of this illustration.
