Hey Diddle Diddle

Only the Cat But What a Party!

ECLIPSE Image Number 00690004

The cat is playing the fiddle, but there is no sign of the cow or the other characters. All the children are joyously dancing or absorbed in watching the cat make his music. Only the maid behind the table of food, which has yet to interest the celebrants, seems bored. Soft warm colors, lively action, and the details of the clothing and wallpaper add to the appeal of this image by one of children’s literature’s earliest and best known illustrator.
