A Frog He Would A-Wooing Go

Gulp! – Goodbye Froggie

ECLIPSE Image Number 01790000

These two connected oval images in serene blue tones are sequential but have very different moods, at least from the point of view of the frog. In the first scene, Froggie is seen waving goodbye to a friend as he leaves home, almost dancing across a crude bridge with his top hat in hand, off to a grand adventure and perhaps a wife. The second image, however, pictures the older version of this tale’s ending. The duck is swallowing Froggie, and his top hat is floating on the water. The blues and browns of this illustration with white highlights have a very calm feeling, which might be consistent with the duck’s perspective. The large brown tree on the right of the second image has “weeping” branches and leaves that extend into the first scene which, along with the elaborate oval frames, tie the two views of this rhyme together.
