A Frog He Would A-Wooing Go
Stepping Out – Play for Your Lady
Although Caldecott’s frog set off on foot to court Miss Mousey, Catalano’s frog grandly steps atop a large goose to ride off to court his love. This image refers back to the 17 th century Scottish version, picturing Froggie wearing a kilt and carrying his bagpipes to serenade Miss Mouse. Notice the photographer recording this auspicious beginning of the journey. He soon will pick up the drum off to the left and join Froggie because, of course, one needs a drum with the pipes. In the second image, Miss Mouse comes to her balcony window, obviously enchanted with the sound of their music. This Miss Mouse does seem to live in opulence. Note the details of her home, her dress, and her jewelry. Note too how the colors in the clothing of the two main characters tie them together. The bright sun in the sky forecasts happy days for our couple, but watch out for that tomcat that foreshadows some humorous trouble for the bride and groom at their wedding celebration.
