Is Humpty Dumpty Human? Why Is This Young Child Sitting on a High Wall?

Kate Greenaway, another illustrator of gentle period children, departs from the norm to picture Humpty as a human child. The soft colors and few details in the background encourage viewers to focus on the pensive androgynous child character. The negative space helps to create a sense of loneliness. One only hopes this child will not splatter on the ground below.
