This early silhouette illustration raises a number of questions for contemporary
viewers. What is that spouting out of the yeast bottle?
What is spilled on the floor? What does that "T" stand for? How did that
duck get in the kitchen? And perhaps most important, what are those children
with their backs to us asking that baker? They appear too well-dressed
to be begging, but the outstretched hand could be interpreted as such.
If they can ignore the rolling pin and the ingredients on the floor, they
may just be asking for an extra treat.
