Hot Cross Buns!

Singing Salesperson - Satisified Customers

ECLIPSE Image Number 00680004

Here is another happy hot cross bun seller.

She is singing, rather than crying out, her song. Two young satisfied customers are on the left. In the background, though, two adults appear to be gossiping about the hot cross bun lady. Are street sellers frowned upon here? Is this a social indictment? Or is their inclusion just random. We find two unusual features in this illustration. First, her hot cross buns are not visible: they are covered with a cloth. Second, the blooming trees and flowers indicate a warm summer day, rather than Lent, the season with which hot cross buns are usually associated. On the other hand, two church spires are evident in the background, pointing to the religious significance of hot cross buns.
