Hot Cross Buns!

Real Crosses - Religious Symbols

Of the six illustrations featured here, the structure of this illustration gives the most formal nod to the religious significance of hot cross buns. The feeling in the picture is reverent, almost solemn; the buns and coins are purposefully arranged. The coins are neatly stacked and standing upright, and look almost like candlesticks on an altar. The rosy orange and yellow colors make the setting subdued, like the light at dusk through church windows. The crosses, too, look more like religious crosses than on the other buns, where they sometimes look like Xs. Compare them to the other buns.

ECLIPSE Image Number 01180000 These buns are also the only one to feature candied fruit on top, a variation on the recipe (see Recipe section.) In many ways this illustration is the most interesting of all, for its symbolism.
