Little Boy Blue

Old Enough to Know Better - Still Young Enough to Dream

ECLIPSE Image Number 00320000

Here we have a Little Boy Blue who is a bit older than the very young children often depicted in earlier works. He has carelessly kicked off his shoes and lain back on the haystack. The way that his head is cradled in his arm suggests that he might have been daydreaming – looking up at the clouds – and accidentally dozed off. His hand remains curled around his horn, as if he were ready to spring into duty at a moment's notice. Good thing, too – for he has been found out! We can see by the frame across the bottom of the picture that he is soon back at work, and he does his job well.

In Tarrant's version we have a Little Boy Blue who is old enough to know better, but still young enough to dream.
