| Mother Goose: A Scholarly Exploration |
Little Boy BlueAt One with Nature - To Dream in the Middle of the DayThis early work by Tasha Tudor uses yet another variant of the rhyme, similar to ones used by Halliwell and Lang. As with many early illustrations of Little Boy Blue, the boy is young and angelic-looking. He seems very small and innocent, especially when compared with the size of the haystack. The geese seem to be guarding him, keeping a lookout for anyone who might come by and try to wake him. As the geese watch their own young, they also protect and tend to this vulnerable human youngster. The scene is pastoral, with cows and barns in the background. There is a peaceful sense of the child being at one with nature. One hand lies on his stomach; the other is flung out beside him as if he has put all of his cares to rest for the day. How wonderful to be a child again, to so easily put one's worries aside! |
