Betty Botter Bought Some Butter

A Filthy Kitchen - Would You Eat Anything Betty Baked?

ECLIPSE Image Number 02970000

The text of the Betty Botter rhyme is worked into this illustration along with two other rhymes about food (Peas Porridge Hot and Baby and I were baked in a pie). This is a perfect way to showcase Betty's terrible housekeeping. Not only is Betty's batter spilling out of the bowl and all over her clothing and hair, but the peas porridge is shown dripping down on the shelf as well. At first glance, it seems that the cracked dishes, broken eggs, spilled peas, and other vegetables all over the floor are the result of a one-time accident in the kitchen. However, the presence of two giddy rats and an eager cockroach indicate this scenario is probably the usual state of Betty's kitchen. Another indication of this is Betty's pleased expression upon tasting the better batter. She seems totally oblivious to the rest of the mess. If you went to a restaurant where the food was delicious, but the kitchen looked liked this; would you want to dine there?
