A Diller, a Dollar
D is for Dunce Cap - Better Hide that Horn Book Paddle
The dunce cap, with a large capital letter ‘D’ on its front,
is at the center of this illustration. The student may be trying to appear
appropriately repentant to avoid being punished via the dunce cap. The
student may also dread the switch in the hand of the teacher, who has
a severe expression on his face. The switch and the dunce cap are the
same threatening elements that appear in "Order in the Court."
The teacher and the student in this illustration are both attired in fashions
mindful of those worn by prosperous people during the American Colonial
period.
