The Absent-minded Professor - Maybe Not This Time

ECLIPSE Image Number 00380000

The teacher in this illustration has a disheveled appearance; he is not as prim and proper as the teachers in other illustrations for this rhyme. However, he is wearing a mortarboard, presumably so that he may be identified as a member of faculty. It is unusual for this teacher to take note of his pupils’ tardiness because he is often preoccupied. His students take advantage of this situation, often sneaking in late without being noticed. The student, peaking through an opening in the door, spies his teacher in the act of checking his wristwatch. The ‘oops’ look on the student’s face indicates that he knows he didn’t escape detection and that he may have to suffer the consequences.
