A Diller, a Dollar

A Mouse and a Stopwatch - Where's the Teacher?

ECLIPSE Image Number 01300001

Each nursery rhyme in this 1981 book is illustrated with mouse characters in old-fashioned clothing. This version of ‘A Diller, A Dollar’ is distinctive for its absence of the speaker who is usually depicted as a teacher or other authority figure. Instead we have a mouse in a tattered green coat with elbow patches, who appears to have lost track of time while pursuing his independent studies with a little stack of schoolbooks. The stopwatch, which appears oversized in comparison to the mouse, stresses that the time is now noon; and the little mouse is just remembering to go to school. This illustration makes the mouse a somewhat lovable character who is probably trying to do his best.
